Primary Schools

Our science project is for pupils in Year 5, co-delivered by The Ogden Trust and The Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge.

The aim is to grow science capital among Year 5 pupils in Rochdale, so that more of them see science, and physics in particular, as something they can do, enjoy and pursue long term.

We focus on:

  • Increasing pupils’ confidence in their ability in science
  • Showing pupils that science is relevant to their lives and community
  • Increasing the value of science for pupils and their families

Building science confidence

Eight primary schools are invited to take part

Each nominating a team of five pupils for the in-person programme.

Schools are selected based on need and commitment to the programme. Within each school, pupils are chosen for:

Teachers are asked to avoid only picking the “usual suspects” and to include at least two girls in each group to support gender balance in science.

Each group attends with an accompanying adult responsible for behaviour and safeguarding.

How it works

The programme consists of:

  • Monthly sessions take place on weekday afternoons at Rochdale Town Hall.
  • Pupils share and present to parents and the wider community in a final celebration event.

The same pupils attend all sessions which builds continuity, trust and momentum.

How it works

What pupils do

The focus is on working scientifically, not just memorising facts.

Pupils are encouraged to:

  • Choose independent, locally relevant science projects that matter to them
  • Plan and carry out investigations in teams
  • Record their thinking, methods and results in their own lab books
  • Learn to question, test, adapt and reflect, just as real scientists do

By the end, they don’t just know more science. They feel like young scientists. And that identity is what changes the trajectory.
