CPD

In partnership with The Ogden Trust, AVECC offers targeted Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities that deepen subject knowledge, strengthen pedagogy and support higher attainment in primary science.

Backing the people who make the first spark

Our current teacher-focused offer grows directly out of the Year 5 Science Project, through a physics twilight session.

Each autumn term, we launch the programme with a primary physics CPD session for primary science leads, delivered by The Ogden Trust. In the pilot phase, this takes the form of a 90-minute twilight session, coordinated with advice from Rochdale Council’s schools team.

Aims

As an example current session, “Surviving in Space” would aim to:

  • Explore how space can be used as a real-world context across the primary science curriculum
  • Model practical, space-themed activities that develop “working scientifically” skills
  • Gve teachers ready-to-use ideas they can take straight back into the classroom

Each attendee receives a pack of 3D space cards to support follow-up work with pupils.

Aims

Future offer

Over time, we aim to grow this into a more in-depth CPD offer, potentially drawing on programmes such as the Ogden Phizzi CPD model and other extended training.

The long-term aim is to:

  • Increase pupils’ attainment in science
  • Equip primary teachers with the confidence, resources and subject knowledge to challenge more learners, more often

Our teacher programmes are about building capacity. When we invest in teachers, we multiply impact across classrooms, year groups and whole schools. And that’s how change sticks.
